Whether it’s trying to do you first pull-up or a double bodyweight deadlift

Or losing some fat

Or doing a push-up

Whatever it is…

The ultimate goal is to be fit, strong, and healthy for as long as possible

These little intermittent goals can be helpful to keep you on that greater path

But being “goal oriented” by itself isn’t inherently good or bad

It’s about enjoying your life

I see people all the time who are goal oriented to a fault

I see people all the time who get excited by goals and it helps them enjoy things

..and more than likely life is full of both of these emotions at different times

Goals can make things fun!

And at the same time, there’s something beautiful about being able to enjoy the day to day without being so focused on some external outcome

Here’s a quick lesson in progressive overload from my recent episode with Jordan🤣

As @Jmbrunofitness and I plan on making a human at some point in the next year, it was great to talk with Jordan about becoming a father and how that’s affected his views on fitness, business, and life in general

I have no idea how hard it’s gonna be to be a parent but I’m excited for that chapter (aka the rest of my life lmao) and it was great about something other than hypertrophy for a change 😊

But Jordan they’re gaining weight eating 1700 and their TDEE is 2100

Are they actually eating 1700?

Is their TDEE actually 2100?

How are you so sure about all this?

Problem 1: You’re assuming they’re actually eating 1700. Even the most diligent trackers will be off by some % for a multitude of reasons. I’m not saying everyone is intentionally lying…but there are a lot of reasons this number is probably higher than what’s in your tracker.

Problem 2: You’re too certain about this 2100 number…as if you had the person go into a lab and got their TDEE tested and didn’t use some random calculator online that almost certainly is best used as a wide ballpark.

Problem 3: You’re using these numbers so rigidly and ignoring the data in front of you. YOUR CLIENT IS GAINING WEIGHT. They are in a calorie surplus. Start with that as an absolute undeniable fact and work with your client to help figure out how to use that information to course-correct if need be. And no…the asnwer isn’t “you just have to wait longer” or “you have to push up even higher!”

Problem 4: You’re prioritizing the numbers and forgetting to talk to your client about how they feel. If the super intricate mega-specific calorie calculator says 2100, but they’re eating 1700, not gaining weight, and feeling good…while you can ABSOLUTELY still say “hey, why don’t we try 1800 and see how it goes” AFTER helping your client work on their consistency and accuracy enough that you feel you can, at least for now, take “adherence/they’re not actually eating that much” off the table (can’t really ever go off the table…but for now). Your job is to get your clients to feel good. Make sure that’s the main focus.

I’m sure I’ll eventually move on to another topic but the amount of messages I’ve gotten of people gaining unwanted weight being told they just “weren’t patient enough” or “didn’t push calories up high enough” and then left to feel like a failure is pissing me off

Yes we live in a food environment where there is lots of readily accessible, cheap, highly palatable, calorie dense foods at our fingertips

Yes this is a contributor (of many) to the growing % of people overweight and obesity around the world

No…it’s not because they SpiKe YoUr BlOOd SuGaR

It’s because they have a lot of calories, aren’t very filling, and are fucking delicious

Which makes them very easy to overeat on calories.
